The Story of Värtemäe
The Polish and Swedish border used to run across the lands of the present Värtemäe Farm. Vast and impassable virgin forests were here in those days and only one road ran through the area, so huge gates were built here.
The gates had been so enormous that several men were needed to open and close the gates and the noise of their movement was heard to Vana-Antsla Manor.
People still talk about that the Devil himself used to sit on that gate in night time and move his legs thus making the gate make a horrible noise. Another devil had become jealous and had build a gate for himself as well – on top of the Karsi Hill. Then they both sat on their gates and made the gates squeak as hell.
