Oru farm

Who we are

Oru Farm was built in 1926 and it came into existence when a cottager's place was measured out of the lands of Rebase Ranch, Karula Manor during the land reform of the 1920s. Only the log sauna and barn on boulder foundation have survived from the original farm complex.

Our story in Oru Farm started in 1990 when we started cleaning up around our newly acquired farm complex which was build near the mire and was then falling apart and overgrown with brushwood. We had such a great desire to own our own home! Until then (since our marriage in 1985), we had to make do with a city apartment. We moved into Oru Farm on 11 July 1991.

We have raised all kinds of farm animals, except horses, we have grown grain, potatoes, all kinds of vegetables. During the recent five years, we have concentrated on berries: besides currants we have also an almost one-hectare strawberry plantation. We grow strawberries on a plastic mulch, and thanks to a very rich soil, the berries are big and clean.

Oru family has five members: Merike (born in 1967) works as a tourism and nature education specialist at Karula National Park, Silver (1962) is an entrepreneur who offers transportation services, the kids Viljo (1987) and Liane (1988) go to Lüllemäe Basic School and the youngest child Liina (1997.a.) goes to the kindergarten of Karula rural municipality. A white cat Simba, who is the favourite of the two blonde girls, and a mongrel Dachshund Toru (Tube) are also members of the family.

The whole family likes music: some of us compose, some sing, some play an instrument and some just listen. We like dancing and sports (mountain skiing, swimming). Mother likes travelling and floriculture (irises, lilies and bulbous flowers).

We can speak Võron (one of the dialects in South Estonia), Estonian, Finnish, English and Russian.

We have been part of the Woods Crone Family Park since November 2001.

We offer our guests...

In summer: Strawberry picking
Already picked strawberries
Picking black, white and red currants, cherries and gooseberries
Camping, picnics, swimming
At the beginning of June, irises are blooming, in July, lilies (we have over 20 different varieties of each).

In autumn: apples, plums

In winter: fruit preserves – raw jam, compotes, home-made wine, juice, syrup and jams (also in summer if you call us beforehand). Skiing, sleighing on farmlands and further away.

In spring: fresh air, greenery, birdsong, beautiful flowers (blooming tulips, narcissuses daffodils and hyacinths).

In the yard, there's a pond where you can swim and catch fish (crucian carp); nearby, there's also a deep and clear-watered lake, Lake Rebase. In the nearby mire, you can observe beavers' life.

All other farms of the Woods Crone Family Park, hiking trails of Karula National Park, ski tracks of Lüllemäe and a bicycle trail are nearby.

Other nearby attractions include ranch buildings of Rebase Manor, including a barn-kilnhouse with the whipping stone, Tornimägi and a gully.

Karula Mary's Church, Karula Manor, ancient barrows and dwelling place of Mähkli, and Karkküla burrow are within five kilometres from us.

How to find us:

When you come from Valga (Valga-Lüllemäe-Antsla road), drive through Lüllemäe until asphalt ends and a gravel road turns to the right, in the direction of the centre of Karula National Park. After two kilometres when you have reached the top of our highest hill, Tornimägi, turn right to the direction of Kolski hamlet. After half a kilometre, you will see Rebase Lake on your right. Then you'll have to turn to left; you can see Oru Farm from the road.

When you come from Võru and Antsla, drive 16 kilometres on Antsla-Lüllemäe-Valga road until you see the sign that points to the centre of Karula National Park, follow it. After two kilometres you'll see a sign pointing to Kolski hamlet standing at a crossroad.

The most exciting road to us, however, is an old southern Estonian racing road. You can drive to the curvy and fun Lüllemäe-Kaika-Litsmetsa road from Võru via Sänna-Tsooru, Antsla-Haabsaare or Saru. After six kilometres from the crossroads of three hamlets, you'll reach Rebasemõisa hamlet, then, from the top of the highest hill, turn left and follow the Kolski hamlet sign.
